Chlorofluorocarbons (or CFCs) are gases previously used in refrigeration of fridges. The chlorine into these gases, it was later discovered, reacted with the ozone from the atmosphere, causing the loss of its protection against the action of ultraviolet rays, which cause diseases such as skin cancer.
With the signing of the Montreal Protocol, which enforces the replacement of CFCs, gases that are harmless to the ozone layer, such as Propane, are starting to be utilized in refrigeration systems.
